Introduction to the 2024 Ghana Parliamentary Elections
The 2024 Ghana parliamentary elections have been a pivotal moment in the nation’s political landscape. With a landscape often characterized by robust competition, this year’s elections saw several prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) face unexpected defeats, leaving political analysts and supporters alike in shock.
Notable NPP MPs Who Lost
Among the most notable NPP MPs defeated in the 2024 elections were individuals who had previously held influential positions. Their defeats serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Ghanaian politics. For instance, the loss of a long-standing MP in a critical constituency underscores the shifting sentiments of voters, who are increasingly prioritizing accountability and representation.
K.T. Hammond, a long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, was unseated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani.
Hammond secured 13,275 votes, while Dorani won with 14,229.
Darkoa Newman of Okaikwei South and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful of Ablekuma West also lost their seats, with Mrs Owusu-Ekuful falling to the NDC’s Rev. Kweku Addo, who won with 31,866 votes against her 26,575.

In Dormaa East, Twum Barima narrowly lost to Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who secured 12,310 votes to Barima’s 12,050.
The NDC also won the Hohoe seat where Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo unseated NPP’s John Peter Amewu.
In Assin Central, a seat the vociferous Ken Ohene Agyapong has held for several years but decided not to contest again, the NDC snatched it from the NPP candidate.
Implications for Future Elections
The defeats of these NPP MPs could have significant implications for the party’s strategy moving forward. As they regroup and analyze the outcomes, there will undoubtedly be discussions surrounding the need for fresh faces and ideas within the party. Voter behavior demonstrated a clear desire for change, which will likely influence how parties approach campaign strategies in future elections.
In summary, the 2024 elections were marked by notable losses for the NPP. As the political scene continues to evolve, the focus on responsiveness to constituents cannot be overlooked. These key defeats signal a new chapter in Ghana’s parliamentary landscape, raising questions and expectations as we look toward future elections.
